When I was on maternity leave in 2020, I grappled with postpartum depression.

I felt lost and yearned for something more—something that would allow me to stay close to my baby yet engage my mind and spirit.

One day, while listening to a podcast while feeding my baby, I realized that there was a growing market for digital products.

An idea that would let me channel my creativity, work from the comfort of my home, and even maybe bring in extra income.

I was searching for something more, so I bought a course and started learning.

The Beginning: A Glimmer of Potential

I’ve always been somewhat creative, but never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that this passion could turn into a lucrative venture. Like many of you, I had a 9-to-5 job that paid the bills, but something was always missing.

Leveraging Etsy: The Goldmine of Opportunities

I had been creating things in Canva for years, but never in my wildest dreams did I think there was a market to sell them.

I knew about Etsy but didn’t know you could sell digital products on the platform.

All I knew was that people went to Etsy looking for unique, handcrafted items.

However, upon taking the course I bought, I learned that digital products can be sold on Etsy. Not only that, Etsy will deliver them for you, meaning you don’t have to worry about shipping, creating automated systems, or even getting customers- Etsy does it all for you.

The Big Surprise: More Than Just Pocket Change

I started with modest expectations—maybe a few extra bucks to buy groceries once a month, and at first, it met my expectations. However, as months went by and I refined my strategy, the numbers started to climb. It took me months, but eventually, I went from making $50 a month to $650, and then the month after that was in the thousands, and before I knew it, I was consistently hitting the $10,000 mark!

It probably wasn’t healthy, but I would check my phone a lot in those early days because I simply didn’t believe this was real.

The best part is that I finally felt comfortable leaving my 9-5 job.

This side hustle, which began as an experiment, allowed me to replace my full-time director-level income and gave me the freedom to work on my terms.

In 2021, I put in my notice and never looked back.

My Love for Digital Products

Digital products are a game-changer. There’s no inventory to manage, no shipping hassles, and the margins are fantastic.

The possibilities are endless, from printable wall art and planners to digital stickers and e-books.

And the best part?

You can create them all using Canva, an incredibly user-friendly design tool perfect for beginners and pros.

Guiding You to Your Own Success Story

The path to success on Etsy may seem overwhelming at first, but with a structured approach and unwavering determination, you can create a thriving business. Here are the steps that were pivotal in my journey:

1. Research and Identify Your Niche

Before you start creating, it’s essential to understand the market. Spend time browsing Etsy and other online marketplaces. Take note of trending products and see if any resonate with you. Remember, the most successful products often strike a balance between market demand and the creator’s passion. Ask yourself:

  • What are people searching for?
  • Which categories seem oversaturated, and which ones have room for something fresh?
  • What aligns with my skills and interests?

2. Use Canva to Bring Your Ideas to Life

Canva is a treasure trove for creators. Whether you’re a seasoned designer or a newbie, Canva caters to all. Explore:

  • Their extensive template library which covers everything from planners to posters.
  • The drag-and-drop interface that makes design a breeze.
  • Customization options that let your unique style shine through.

3. Set Up Your Etsy Shop

Your shop is your brand’s face, so give it the attention it deserves:

  • Craft an appealing shop name and logo (you can do this in Canva!).
  • Write clear, concise product descriptions. Highlight the benefits and features of your digital products.
  • Use high-quality images that showcase your product in the best light. Remember, visuals play a significant role in online purchases.

4. Promote Your Products

If you set up your shop correctly, Etsy will bring you customers. However, in the beginning, it helps to promote it yourself:

  • Utilize platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, and Facebook. Share behind-the-scenes looks, customer testimonials, and new product launches.
  • Collaborate with influencers in your niche. This can exponentially increase your reach.
  • Offer limited-time discounts or bundle deals to attract new customers.

5. Engage with Your Customers

Building relationships is at the heart of any successful business:

  • Respond to queries promptly and with a personal touch.
  • Seek feedback. It’s a goldmine for improvement.
  • Encourage satisfied customers to leave reviews. Glowing reviews not only build trust but also boost your visibility on Etsy.

6. Have a Growth Mindset and Continue to Learn

The digital marketplace is dynamic. What’s trending today might be old news tomorrow:

  • Stay updated with market trends and adjust your offerings accordingly.
  • Regularly seek feedback from customers and make necessary tweaks.
  • Invest in learning. Whether it’s a new design skill or marketing strategy, continuous learning will keep you ahead of the curve.

By following this blueprint and adding your unique flair, you’re well on your way to building a successful digital product business on Etsy. Remember, every big achievement starts with the decision to try. So, take that leap, and let your creativity soar!

The Bottom Line

The world is brimming with opportunities for those willing to take the leap. My journey from a casual self-taught designer to an Etsy powerhouse has been exhilarating, to say the least.  Remember, the first step is always the hardest. But with passion, perseverance, and a sprinkle of guidance, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.
